Dwayne Peel supports Welsh-language Book Club

13 Sep 2007

Dwayne Peel was delighted to join the Welsh Books Council in celebrating 25 years of the Welsh-language book club for 7–11 year-olds, Sbondonics. Dwayne remembers the days when he was still at school, and the thrill of receiving a range of new books each term

Even during his preparations with the Welsh team for the Rugby World Cup in France, Dwayne took time out to send a personal message to club readers.

'The Sbondonics Club is the best Welsh-language book club,' said Dwayne. 'I really enjoyed buying and reading those books when I was your age.'

As part of the celebrations, all members who buy books through the club will receive a special passport with their order, and an opportunity to win some great prizes. A number of prominent authors are also supporting the club, with their autographs featured in the passport. These include T. Llew Jones, Mair Wynn Hughes and Emily Huws.

'The children, parents and teachers all appreciate what is on offer through the book club, and it's as popular now as it was 25 years ago,' said Delyth Humphreys on behalf of the Books Council.

As well as running the Sbondonics Club, the Books Council also have a book club for 4–7 year-olds, Sbri-di-ri, with leaflets distributed to schools throughout Wales. This year, for the first time, a special nursery edition has been produced, to cater for the needs of the youngest members.
