New Face for ‘Give a Book Week 2010'

The BBC Wales presenter Lucy Owen will head up the reading campaign  'Give a Book Week'  in 2010.

Following the tremendous success of  ‘Give a Book Week’  during the 2008 National Year of Reading in Wales it will return in 2010. The Welsh Books Council, financed by the Welsh Assembly Government, has organised the campaign to become one of the central feature of the annual World Book Day in Wales.

Becoming the new face of  ‘Give a Book Week’ is Lucy Owen, the presenter of BBC Wales’s flagship news programme  Wales Today  and co-presenter of consumer affairs programme  X-Ray,  will head the campaign and draw the public’s attention to books and reading.

The campaign encourages people from across Wales to give a book as a gift to family, friends and colleagues, to share the gift of reading.

Lucy, the experienced TV presenter and journalist said  "Books and reading are close to my heart. I enjoy reading and realise it is a fundamental part of everyday life. Reading is crucial for everyone and it should be made fun. I want to encourage every single person in Wales to give a book to a friend, member of family or colleague."

Lucy’s husband Rhodri Owen, her co-presenter on  X-Ray  and longstanding TV presenter on both English and Welsh programmes is also supporting the campaign and added  "Throughout my career and even more so since becoming a family we have realised the importance of books and reading. Our son loves books and he develops quickly by learning so much from them."

Delyth Humphreys, World Book Day Coordinator commented  "Having Lucy and Rhodri on board really emphasises the importance of reading and hopefully will inspire every generation in Wales to give a book."

The campaign will take place during the week of the 27 February - 6 March with a launch planned on Wednesday 24  February in the Senedd with Lucy Owen and the Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning with other events and activities taking place throughout the week across Wales.

Delyth explains,  "We’re working with bookshops, libraries, schools, the voluntary sector as well as the business community to promote Give a Book Week in Wales.  We’re really pleased that Lucy and Rhodri are supporting this campaign and are so eager to take part.  Sharing your favourite book with someone is something that really brings people and communities together".

Give a Book Week 2010 will take place from Saturday 27 February to Saturday 6 March which will incorporate World Book Day on Thursday 4 March.
