Young Writers Bag a Pot of Gold

1 Feb 2010

The organisers of four lucky teams of Academi’s Young People’s Writing Squads across Wales have won  £500 each to hold readers’ days for Squad members as part of this year’s World Book Day celebrations.

The Young People’s Writing Squads have been developed over the past decade by Academi in association with the local authorities in Wales. The Squads aim to locate gifted writers – in both English and Welsh – in each authority region and introduce them to some of Wales’s leading writers and writing tutors.

The four lucky Squads are those belonging to the counties of Bridgend, Gwynedd, Merthyr Tydfil and Swansea. The Bridgend Writing Squad will focus on the Bro Cynffig Chronicles, an exciting project which plans to record and tell the history of the Cynffig area through words, drawings and other activities. The Swansea Squad will enjoy sessions given by a number of young Welsh authors, and in Merthyr Tydfil, in addition to the author sessions, there will be games, quizzes, raffles and a lunch. Authors Bethan Gwanas, Caryl Lewis and Lleucu Roberts will be invited to join the members of the Gwynedd Squads in order to encourage their writing skills.

"All four Squads have put together an exciting and varied programme to celebrate World Book Day 2010 – programmes that are sure to inspire the young writers," said Delyth Humphreys of the Books Council.

Peter Finch, Academi’s Chief Executive, commented: "We are delighted to be working with the Welsh Books Council on this initiative as it represents a great opportunity for all Squads. The young writers really benefit from the workshops and meeting the authors face to face."

Young People’s Writing Squads welcome children whose creative writing shows particular ability and promise. Each Squad of children meets on average three or four times a year for special training sessions with outstanding writers who have the necessary communication skills to work with the young writers.
