Book Man Turns Over a New Leaf

The former owner of an Aberaeron bookshop has recently been appointed Manager of the Welsh Books Council’s Distribution Centre in Aberystwyth.

Neville Evans was appointed to the post following the retirement of Dafydd Charles Jones, who was head of the Distribution Centre for twenty-one years.

A native of New Quay, Ceredigion, Neville Evans previously owned and managed a bookshop in Aberaeron and he also has extensive experience as an administrator following a period as organiser of the Urdd National Eisteddfod and the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Before joining the staff of the Books Council, he worked at Theatr Felinfach, which is run under the auspices of Ceredigion County Council.

In welcoming the appointment, Elwyn Jones, Director of the Welsh Books Council, said: ‘Neville has extensive experience in administration and financial matters, and the skills he has gained over the years will be extremely relevant to the work of managing a busy distribution centre that is at the heart of the book trade in Wales. As he has also managed a bookshop, he is already very familiar with the industry.’

Neville Evans commented: ‘I’m looking forward immensely to joining the staff of the Welsh Books Council and to following in the footsteps of my predecessor in the post.’

Elwyn Jones also paid a warm tribute to Dafydd Charles Jones for his unstinting service over many years, saying: ‘To many publishers and booksellers, Dafydd Charles was the public face of the Books Council, and under his leadership the Centre has provided a first class service. During the twenty-one years in which he was at the helm, the Centre has been transformed into a flourishing business with a turnover of around £5 million, and this success is due in no small part to the hard work of Dafydd and his staff in providing for the needs of the publishing industry.'
