Reading - where does it take you?

4 Mar 2015

Do you love reading? Capturing people's love of reading is not an easy task, but to celebrate World Book Day in Wales this year the campaign has created a short film aiming to show the emotional connection created by reading.

The title of the film is  Reading: Where does it take you? The film follows the journey of an actor, Ceri Owain Murphy, leaving his home to walk around Cardiff, with his nose firmly fixed in his book. Where will reading take him? The film concludes with a visit to a book club where Ceri takes a group of young readers through a range of emotions by reading aloud. This is the story of one man's reading journey but where does reading take you?

Angharad Tomos, on behalf of the Welsh Books Council, said:  ‘This is the first time for us to create a short film to celebrate World Book Day. It's a short film , just two and a half minutes in length, to celebrate the power and pleasure of reading.

‘The simple message is that reading takes you on a journey. We see the actor immersed in his book, and the film ends as he conveys to a new generation of readers the pleasure that can be gained from books and reading. Our intention was to create a short film to show the importance, the pleasure and the wonder of reading. And if, after watching the film, you’re inspired to take a book off the shelf and read it  – all well and good!’

For the closing scenes, the World Book Day campaign  – in partnership with the Urdd City Sleepover and the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff  – filmed a group of pupils from Ysgol y Bedol, Ammanford, during their visit to Cardiff.

The short film has been released on-line for World Book Day, Thursday 5 March, 2015.
