Great Rugby Moments

15 Sep 2015

In a new book, Gareth Edwards chooses  50 great moments  in the history of rugby union.

Great Rugby Moments  by Gareth Edwards & Alun Wyn Bevan (Gomer Press) was officially launched at the Gareth Edwards Lounge in BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Tuesday evening, 15 September.

Amongst the great moments are team tries from the end of the world, last-minute kicks which meant the world and individual skills which are out of this world, featuring players from all the major rugby-playing nations. They also include off-the-field episodes, some of which changed the face of rugby for ever.

There are the perennial favourites, of course. But there are also more surprising, more personal choices, reflecting Gareth’s knowledge and love of the game.

From William Webb Ellis to Grand Slams to World Cup finals and with over 150 photographs, Great Rugby Moments tells the story of rugby union through a series of memorable cameos.

Sir Gareth Edwards is recognized the world over as one of the greatest rugby players ever.

An ever-present scrum-half in the Wales Grand Slam teams of 1971, 1976 and 1978, he also played in the Lions sides which conquered New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974. When he retired from rugby, he became one of the resident captains on A Question of Sport and has since been in demand as a broadcaster with BBC, ITV and S4C. He was knighted in 2015 for services to sport and to charitable services.

Author and broadcaster Alun Wyn Bevan is a former first-class referee and headmaster, and he has been closely associated with a series of Gomer’s bestsellers, including Stradey Stories (2005), Grav in his Own Words (2008), Welsh Rugby Captains (2010), Alun Wyn Jones’s World Cup Year (2011) and Phil Bennett’s The Greatest Scarlets XV Ever (2014).

Peter Bills, who has contributed the foreword, is an award-winning writer and sports journalist.
