The Castle Walls Resound

23 Feb 2016

600 children from schools in Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire enjoyed Sioe@LlyfrDaFabBooks in Cardigan Castle recently, in an event organised by the Welsh Books Council.

Four authors – Sioned Lleinau, Caryl Lewis, Huw Aaron and Casia Wiliam – discussed their work and the pathway to creating a book and its illustrations. Author Casia Wiliam said it was a special day: "It was a pleasure to see Cardigan Castle packed full of children over the two days and hearing what they enjoy reading and what makes them laugh! It’s great to see the Welsh Books Council offering events such as this, that give whole classes an opportunity to meet authors, and, hopefully, will inspire them to write." Anwen Francis from the Books Council said: "We really had a ball! Imagine – six hundred children and four authors enjoying discussing book content and cartoons. We are really looking forward to our next journey when the Books Council will be organising an event in the south-east." As well as entertaining the children of the area, one of the aims of the event was to sell books and to give a local bookseller the opportunity to exhibit his stock. Geraint James from Awen Teifi felt the event had been a huge success: "It was fantastic to be able to work with the authors, the children, Cardigan Castle and, of course, the Welsh Books Council. The event was of benefit to everyone and we hope we can organise more special events like this together here in Cardigan in the near future." The Welsh Books Council now hopes to organise a similar event during the next few months at a location in south Wales.
